‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions – What to Expect in Your Driving Test

When you take your practical driving test, you’ll be asked one ‘Tell Me’ question at the start of the test and one ‘Show Me’ question while you’re driving.

These questions are designed to test your knowledge of basic car safety and maintenance – and to make sure you’re confident handling simple tasks behind the wheel.

At LPass’o Driving School, we make sure all our pupils are fully prepared for both.

What is a ‘Tell Me’ question?

This is asked before you start driving. You’ll be asked to explain how you’d carry out a safety check or task. You won’t need to demonstrate it – just talk the examiner through the process.

Example:

  • “Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.”

What is a ‘Show Me’ question?

This happens while you’re driving. The examiner will ask you to physically show them how you’d carry out a basic function in the car.

Example:

  • “When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d wash and clean the rear windscreen?”

How to Prepare

At LPass’o, we go through every question with you during your lessons. You’ll also get:

  • A printed reference sheet (like the one below) with all current DVSA questions

  • Real-world practice in the car with your instructor

  • Clear explanations to help you understand what’s being asked and why

The more familiar you are with these, the less pressure you’ll feel on test day.
